UTMB officially cancelled for 2020

On May 20, Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, one of the most revered ultra trail running events on the planet, announced the cancellation of its events scheduled for Aug. 24 to 30.

“We regret to announce that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 edition of the UTMB® Mont-Blanc will not take place from August 24 to 31,” read a statement on the UTMB web site.

The organizers explained that four pillars guided the decision to cancel this year’s event: health and safety of the participants, being able to offer the full and authentic UTMB experience, the mountain, and the DNA of the event rooted in solidarity and equity.

The race is on the bucket list of many trail runners around the world. It has been held for the past 18 years and offers a number of incredible course options, including those that run through the mountains of three countries.

Participants can receive a 55 per cent discount on the entry fee, but UTMB requests that those wishing this option do so before May 30. There is also the option of donating the registration fee to charity. And, UTMB is putting in place the option to secure a place at the event in 2021, 2022 or 2023.

“Despite the cancellation of the 2020 edition, the UTMB® Mont-Blanc organization team is not giving up. We are committed to uniting the global trail running community around a common cause, because we want to make the world a better place,” the statement reads. “We are therefore working hard on developing some new concepts to ensure we can still engage our partners, fans, and runners around the world. We will keep you updated on the progress in the coming weeks.”

It will not be the last time we hear of high profile event cancellations, unfortunately, as those with fall events begin to make decisions on whether or not their events can go-ahead under the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic.
