The 2020 Olympic Games will be postponed
According to a breaking news story in USA Today, Dick Pound has said that the 2020 Olympic Games will be postponed.
“On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided,” Pound said in a phone interview. “The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know," said Pound, to the USA Today.
The move comes less than 24 hours following the withdrawal of Canada and Australia. Pound went on to say that the most likely scenario is that the Games will be postponed until 2021.
The International Olympic Committee will now spend the next weeks ahead to determine the best path forward for the Games, and for Japan, a country that has invested millions of dollars in making the event a success.
In addition to moves by Canada and Australia, Germany was also urging the IOC to move or cancel the Games this summer.
This will be the first time the Olympics have been suspended, although they have been cancelled in the past due to the First and Second World Wars.
