Top 8 reasons to love the Gatineau Loppet

The 42nd edition is scheduled for Feb. 14-16 in Gatineau, Quebec

The legendary Gatineau Loppet is set to take centre stage on Canada’s cross-country ski scene Feb. 14-16. And there is still a chance to take part in this storied event. There will be snow, there will be skis and there will be fun for the entire family. Here are our top six reasons to love this great race:

1. Gatineau Park: This is Nordic ski central in this country; the park is home to one of the largest networks of cross-country ski trails in North America. It is a drop-dead gorgeous and magical setting. And it is all yours for the race weekend! Well, you and a couple thousand of your closest friends.

2. The Loppet offers not one but two unique and challenging 51-km linear courses cutting through the Gatineau Park. Feeling bold? On Saturday, ski the classic 51-km course and come back the next day to do the freestyle course. There is a totally of eight cross-country ski courses for this, the 42nd edition of the Gatineau Loppet. Surely, there will be one just perfect for you.

3. All the family can participate. Gatineau Loppet offers races for all ages including a mini-2K race, and distances of 5K, 10K and 15K, even snowshoe races!

4. There’s shopping! Find the latest and greatest in cross-country ski equipment and much more during the Ski Show all weekend long.

5. Conditions have been splendid since the beginning of winter and there is little doubt that this could shape up to be one of the best race weekends in a long time.

6. Canadian Olympic hero and cross-country skier extraordinaire Alex Harvey will be on hand to meet and greet all of his fans and to talk skiing with the participants. Yes, air guitar photos on the skis could happen.

 7. Delicious local beer is always served at the finish line of every race (18 and older, of course). And you know how good the beer is in Quebec. Magnifique! There will also be maple taffy on snow, traditional music, food and much more.

8. Participate in the Loppet, and then stay for even more fun including snowshoe races, an awards ceremony and aprés-ski festivities at Le Brasseurs du temps (Yes, this may mean more beer.).
